Earth’s Requiem
Chapter 1
“Real Power”
By: Charles Barnes

My intercom cut on with Richard screaming his over sung song.
“Wake up! Everybody wanna know why!
Wake up! Everybody cause the sun is shinin in the sky!
Get up Nyx! It’s test day!”
The sun was shinning through my window making a cross on the wall almost perfectly.
I’ve never seen it do this before, I said to myself
“Today will be a very strange day…”
My job here is training the orphans of the children of earth’s army.
There are 7 kids here whose parents died in the 100th world war. Usually such a death toll is rare since the soldiers that live on earth have evolved and been trained to be extremely powerful beings each single person has the power of a former nations army.
There where only 13 member of earth’s army, the horrible war that had the power to kill 7 of them.  The orbiting space station “Saturn’s Ring” is a network of ships that circle earth the fleet is so massive that it is said it looks just like Saturn’s Rings. They declared independence from earth ofcourse later the war began.  Humans away from earth cannot use its power like the earth’s army so they developed powerful war machines.  Powerful enough to maul earth’s forces in one week the war was over.  They now claim the moon and every ship that orbits earth.

Today the earth is scarred from the war but cities are rebuilding and like water life just keeps on flowing no matter how much mud you kick up in the stream.  I’m training these orphans to use the power of the earth like every human born here has the ability to do.  But today is special its test time and the kids have to demonstrate there powers.
I call them all outside to the training area they all come running out half sleep.
“Test time show me what you guys have learned, first up Hope.”
Hope is a sweet quiet girl.  She is the youngest and is often picked on because she never leave’s her teddy bear behind.
I remember her mother Jupita of earth’s army whom I once loved.  Jupita was our nation’s force she was a rare beauty having long dark black hair a color so rare these days it was thought impossible. Her main weapon of attack was her special control over the wind and air.  She won many battle’s calling on tornados that smashed their machines and thrusting blades of wind slicing them in half.  We were the same rank but she won the place as our army’s main force during the army’s selecting tourney.  She made short work of me and everyone else that fought her.  I never seen her in person after that she became quite famous and had a child with a very well know scientist.  Hope was young when her mother died defending our lands. She summoned two super massive counter spinning tornados and merged them together to form a whirlwind that had a scissor effect.  It destroyed everything in its path none of the machines survived… neither did she…
I was very happy when Hope came to us.  She has very weak powers over the air. The other kids tease so she cry’s a lot. But today feels like a very strange day…

So she timidly went out into the area, all ready the others were teasing her. “Look at the baby! What’s she gonna do this time breeze us to death?”  She took her bow from her strange dark hair. Grabbed a stuffed strawberry her teddy bear was holding and a toy heart from her pocket.  All of a sudden the wind began to blow weakly.  The others laughed and chanted at her usual display.  I noticed something different this time.  Her eye’s where not afraid this time they had the same ferocity as her mother’s before she would use an attack that could level a city block.  The wind began to blow more violently you could hear the whipping and snapping of the wind currents. All of the kids became quiet and still.  By now we could barely stand. The toys she was holding spiraled up into the sky and there were gone.  The wind calmed and everything was back to normal. Shaking off my surprise I said
“Good job Hope your finally showing improvement!  Keep this up and you might contend for the tournament after all.”
All of the kids began teasing again saying
“That’s all? She is a baby that couldn’t hurt anything!”
Our prize student Lune whose power over fire amazes all of the students said.
“She wouldn’t last two seconds in the army’s tournament who’s ever been hurt by a breeze? Ha-ha!”
She would usually cry at this point but instead she grew happier and happier skipping around and laughing.
Rarely saying anything she almost whispered the word “look” as she pointed up.
To everyone’s surprise it was beginning to rain.  But not any rain.  Duplicates of the Bow off her head, the stuffed strawberries her teddy bear always holds and the toy heart from her pocket all rained down from the sky.
This power defies all logic it almost seemed like a dream.  I could even feel my eyes well up with water before a caught myself.  Her mother would have been so proud to live to see this display.  The six other children shook their awe quickly and began playing with the toys but this is the first development of a non-earth based power I could see the grand possibilities.  The ending of the hunger that has plagued this land, more supplies for rebuilding, and so much more.  Only Lune still teased saying “This power could still never hurt one fly.” I replied “She may even be more powerful than you think Lune… You can burn down a dozen homes in an instant.  But she could fill and hundred homes with a meal…”
Lune looked shocked because he has never been rivaled even closely by any of the students he asked me. “So who has the real power? TELL ME!” I said “It’s not for me to say… everyone can take a recess break your test is next Lune.”
Then I half-jokingly whisper to myself… “So far today has been a very strange day…”
